Camping at Robert H. Treman State Park – Swim under a Waterfall in Ithaca, NY

Robert H. Treman is a State Park located in Tompkins County in Ithaca, NY. It was the first State Park to open in the Ithaca area and took 4 years to complete. The park was renamed after Robert Treman, who along with his wife Laura, deeded 300 acres of the former Hamlet of Enfield Falls to the State of New York. This area is now known as the Upper Park and is where the campground is located.

The campground has a total of 86 campsites, which includes 72 campsites and 14 cabins. Only 11 of the campsites offer electricity, so you will need to book quickly if you want one of these sites. These 11 sites are $25. per night and include electricity, a picnic table, and fire ring, with water fill up stations nearby. Non-electric sites offer everything but the electricity for $18. per night. Other amenities include a dump station, a bath house with showers, 2 playgrounds, and a recreation center where people can plan a family reunion or wedding. Outside of the recreation center is a large picnic area with charcoal grills. Firewood is for sale at the front check-in. We found a local on Facebook Marketplace who sold wood by the tractor bucket full for $20., and while driving around trying to find firewood, we ended up at a fantastic Mexican Restaurant and got to see a covered bridge. Sometimes the unexpected and spontaneous are the best! Another option for Firewood is Early Bird Farmer’s market. You can get fresh veggies and firewood at the same place, but they close by 6:00 and we missed them.

The main draw of the park is the 9 miles of hiking trails, the 12 waterfalls along the way, and swimming under a stream-fed waterfall when lifeguards are on duty. Unfortunately, swimming was closed when we were there in June, but that means we had an unobstructed view of the Falls.

The hiking trails in the park are named the Rim Trail and the Gorge Trail. We did both on the same day, which amounted to over 5 miles of hiking and 73 flights of stairs according to our Apple watch. The Rim trail has over 1000′ of elevation change, so make sure you have plenty of water, good hiking boots, and in my case, Kleenex since my nose was running the whole time due to seasonal allergies. Along both trails, the highlight is seeing 115′ Lucifer Falls.

As mentioned earlier, we ended up at Old Mexico Restaurant & Cantina for dinner one night while we were driving around looking for firewood. We really enjoyed it and think you may too. Also to do in the area is a visit to Ithaca Falls. This waterfall is our favorite in the area. A few years ago the water was really flowing and you couldn’t get near it. Ithaca College is nearby, so Robert H. Treman could serve as your overnight stay while dropping your young adult off their Freshman year. Ithaca was rated #1 college town. For seasonal veggies, head over to Ithaca Farmer’s Market, or if you like to golf, try Newman Municipal Golf Course. For your ice cream fix, Dennis’s homemade ice cream is nearby. A good rainy day activity with the kids could be the Science Center Ithaca. Here you will learn about science, the ocean, the stars, and live animals.

We hope that you will enjoy Robert H. Treman State park as much as we did. Click on the link below for our full length video tour. Pressed for time? See our highlight tour in 60 seconds or less.
