Pit Stop – 21 Brix Winery in Portland, NY

Every time we set out to camp at a new campground, I try to research what there is to do in the area that is fun or interesting. Sometimes it’s a lighthouse, museum or hiking trail, sometimes it’s a winery or brewery, like it was on our pit stop from Lake Erie State Park to 21 Brix Winery. To be fair, we didn’t learn about the winery until we met some new friends at the campground who told us about it. And who are we to not listen to a local when they are telling us about one of their favorite spots? So, arms twisted behind our backs, we set out in search of this place.

It’s hard trying to tell you about our first impression. The landscaping there is beautiful, but there is something else that competes for your eye here. We found out later that this is Ella the Elephant.

After waiting our turn to take pictures (it was a popular spot), we headed into the winery to check it out. The first thing I noticed when we walked up is the beautiful curved doors of the entry. Once inside, it’s the charming exposed brick wall and expansive tasting room that draws you in. There are plenty of places inside and out to sit and enjoy some snacks such as their charcuterie board, Bavarian Pretzels, or choice of dips with chips. We also discovered that they also offer beer and champagne! We know what we like though, so after tasting their semi dry Riesling, we took a chilled bottle out to sit outside on a couch under the shade of the building’s eves.

The outdoor area is also beautifully landscaped and has so many options for a place to sit. There are picnic tables with umbrellas, conversation tables in the sun, or like ours, cozy patio furniture in the shade. There are also games like corn hole, Jenga, Connect 4, and others out on the porch for all to enjoy.

After peacefully enjoying our wine, our local friends who were there at the same time, came over to join us for conversation, which inevitably turned to stories of camping… spots to see, memorable trips, and what trips are coming up for the rest of the season. What a memorable stop – we’ll be back again the next time we are in the area! Check them out for yourselves by clicking here.
